To market to market... where to get that Nokia N95

I noticed that just recently that Nokia has announced the opening of a new flagship store in Shanghai, China - FYI, the stores are Nokia's main POC for B to C and are quite important. There's a couple in the USA (New York , Chicago) but hardly enough. Why so? Well... its funny but Nokia is going gangbusters promoting the crap our of the N95 - this device was even recently billed as the official device of the Navteq LBS Challenge... ie. Nokia and Navteq want LBS developers to build apps to run on this device on the S60 environment. So what's the problem? Well... ever tried to buy an N95 in the USA! Currently, buying an unlocked device online (ebay or other) is likely the best way to go, unless you happen to be close to a flagship store. Otherwise, if you go into AT&T or T-Mobile they will likely look at you with a strange look and say "what's an N95"?? Getting to the consumer is a huge issue for Nokia smartphones here in North America and continues to get worse. Finally, get this... just this week I was at a Nokia S60 gig and the crew was giving away an N95 in a door prize (I didn't win.. darn it!) but the kicker... the Nokia/S60 people couldn't find one in San Francisco!! OUCH - one suggested resource for locating these and other products is - GPS-enabled product search, aka. GPS shopping! see www.s60.com / www.nokia.com

Nokia N810 internet tablet ready for prime time??

According to LAPTOP Magazine, the Nokia N810 has won the Best of CTIA Award for Best Overall Product The Linux tablet is the newest device in the company's Nseries line, was honored with LAPTOP's Best of CTIA Award in the Best Overall Product category at the CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2007 Show. Featuring a unique, sleek tablet form factor, and equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 400 MHz processor, a Mozilla-based browser and up to 10GB of storage space, the Nokia N810 provides a premier, portable internet experience. With VoIP calling, instant messaging and e-mail, you can easily stay connected with your colleagues, friends and family. But is Joe consume ready for a Linux Tablet PC? The N810 was a high profiled device last week at cTIa, however, given Nokia's problems at garneing marketshare in North America with any of the high-end Symbian smartphones do you think it's realistic that a Linix Internet tablet will have more success?? I doubt it - see also here for more on the n810

Geotagging / Geolocating your flickr photos with Yahoo! zonetag and locr - a short tutorial

ok… more on the geotagging photos sent to flickr via shozu and my Nokia N95 GPS-enabled smartphone. I’ve recently been doing some research to figure out exactly how to geotag my photos, and get them up on flickr then view on a map. From the outside looking it one would think, “no problemmo”, however, things are not often as simple as they would seem. Luckily there’s a couple of good third party apps that work very well. Those of you that depend on out of the box functionality that wil accomplish this will have to try again!

My research has led me to believe the following:
- there’s much confusion out there about this.
- it’s a total pain in the arse to accomplish using the Nokia N95 out of the box
- it’s not as simple as blogs and other write ups lead you to believe
- many people seem to be having trouble with many different aspects of this.
- some people seem to be experiencing difficulties uploading via shozu from the Nokia N95 - I have yet to see any issues with this.
- apparently you can tag photos from N95 directly with GPS coords if you run sprt tracker or load the maps application - I’ve yet to be able to accomplish this seemingly simple task.

Enter Yahoo! Research labs zonetag and locr. Zonetag from Yahoo! has just recently come out with a version that supports Symbian S60 3rd edition devices (Nokia N80, N95, 6110 etc…). The application is very simple to use and it works. Simply install zonetag, setup your preferences (I’m still tweaking these) load the app, connect the GPS to grab your fix, take a photo, upload to flickr… it’s as simple as that! Once on flickr your photos will have a hyperlink to map the photo and the coordinates will display when you view the photo on a map. So far I’ve had excellent results with this application.

Locr (www.locr.com) operates in a similar manner. Install the app, setup an account, connect to GPS to get a fix, snap a photo, upload to flickr and to locr if you wish. Your photos are maintained in a locr account and from the mobile device you can also view your photos or photos that are near you. Once feature I’m not big on is that the application takes over the camera and you don’t seem to get the full functionality from your device. This contrasts with Zonetag where you use the camera in the same mode that you normally would with your device.

Please note, you should have an all you can eat data plan to use these applications otherwise the results (and your next phone bill) could be scary! I use shozu for uploads normall, however, it seems that when using zonetag or locr you are actually bypassing the shozu functionality… I’m not worried as I can use al teh data I want. Stay tuned for more on these apps. Overall, I give locr a 3.5 out of 5, zonetag gets 4.5 out of 5!

Sinbad Search Beta released

Sinbad Search as an open beta, it is a free application designed for smart mobile devices to simplify information retrieval. We are hoping to find some people interested in smartphones and smartphone applications to take it for a test drive, give us some feedback and maybe even write a bit about it on the web.

Sinbad Search is for looking up information on the go, it is not just intended as another RSS reader but software for finding information you need using your phone wherever you are. It is built with a simple interface and minimal bandwidth use in mind.

Sinbad Search uses modules to organize its functionality and different modules allow you to search specific information. Examples of modules are a dictionary module for word explanation and Wikipedia for encyclopedic reference. There are currently 80 modules ranging from news, famous blogs, reference to entertainment information such astrology and jokes of the day, of course the list will keep on growing. Sinbad Search is less than 100 kilobytes and needs a data connection since everything is accessed online. It is supported on just about any recent phone with Java and we've got a dedicated version for Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform too. We of course have a lot of phones yet to test, but that's all part of the beta process.

You can get it from http://www.sinbadsearch.com

or from the mobile version of the website at http://m.sinbadsearch.com

Google maps mobile on N95 - traffic updates - audio clip

Google MAps Mobile updated at 1.70.2- now running on my Nokia N95

A quick technorati search today seemed to indicate to me that Google Maps Mobile has received some kind of update - although I can't find any definite validation of this. According to some blogs, Google maps mobile has been optimized to run much better on Symbian S60 smartphones (think Nokia N95) So, curiosity got the better of me and I ran to grab it... I currently run Nokia Maps which comes "stock" on the N95. I go to http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/index.html and then register for the latest download. I then get a txt message where I can grab the app (you gotta love all you can eat data plans ;0) I downloaded gmaps mobile (1.7) and loaded her up. The app started me off in London (why??) but then I simply requested that my location be updated.. low and behold in about 2 seconds the map centers on my current position (likely grabbed from cell fix). Then I browse around, switch to satellite image mode, and then even viewed current traffic conditions on I-25 - something that's crucial here as it can easily be a parking lot! I test the search and it works very well... simply put, the latest Google maps mobile on Symbian S60 is freaking awesome! Its fast, intelligent, and it works! I'll be testing some more this week-end so stay tuned. Screen shots and more details are now up on the flickr - see http://www.flickr.com/photos/gisuser/sets/72157602390210155/

Share your content in a Mobile friendly manner with MOSH

A tip... Have you MOSHed yet? MOSH (stands for mobilize and share) is an application just out from Nokia. It enables users to explore and share mobile friendly content. The app is optimized for mobile use although you can use it with your PC as well very comfortably. Simply create a profile and then upload photos, videos, games, documents, applications (i.e. demo ware) etc... its an awesome way to share your content with a HUGE community of mobile users. At first you may wonder why bother, although if you've ever struggled to get data onto your phone you may like this one. For example, you could create a PDF or Word version of your resume and add it as one of your documents.. then while on the road if you ever want your resume, want to send it to someone etc... you can simply send it to your phone or anyone's device for that matter... its very cool! MOSH is free and you don't have to have a NOKIA smartphone to use it.. any web-enabled device that can hit the Internet will work just fine. Check out my MOSH at http://mosh.nokia.com/user/gisuser

follow friends on your phone through Twitter

Twitter has just been updated with some new features... for example, one new feature allows anyone to track concepts in real time over SMS or IM. Tell Twitter what words or phrases you're interested in and you'll receive updates containing those words the instant anyone Twitters them. One of the most popular words being tracked by people right now is "overheard." Send "track overheard" to Twitter to find out why. (Send "untrack" if you change your mind and "stats" to get a list of words you track.) http://twitter.com/blog/2007/09/tracking-twitter.html Or, interested in knowing more about a twitterer... now you can send "whois username" to find out more about that person, or "follow username" to follow his or her updates

More on social networking with utterz

This is a very interesting application designed to be used from a PC client or mobile. It's rather "twitterish" and then some. After setting up a profile (free) users can then configure for auto blog updates where the application then feeds a user's weblog (most popular apps seem to be supported). I configured it to post all my updates to this blogger blog and it did so immediately without hassle - it even realizes that I have multiple blogger profiles in my setup, something my apps freak-out on! Widgets are provided - see right sidebar - where my utterz are also available for viewing and listening. So far I've uploaded a message via the familiar PC client through their website, very simple, and it seems that the text is also turned into an audio clip available on the widget. I've also sent a photos and a video via mobile (N95). I did notice that having the auto blog-update as well as a widget is a bit redundant but remember I was simply testing the functionality.

Utterz seems to have freaked out a bit on the Shozu, recall I use shozu on my mobile to crunch data when uploading... it also neables me to easily send multi-media without having to go through a cumbersome SMS or email send process. Utterz seems to want to post an audio clip from shozu (odd) and then the video does in fact get uploaded.. I'll have to mess around some more. Finally, the audio welcome message that is now available for listening to via the widget was created simply by me calling the special phone number and leaving the message... I'm imagining leaving messages on a personal blog using this or maybe even posting a bunch of audio clips when I'm attending a conference.. imagine live updates from every session or booth I visit while on the road.. way cool! The final test will be to see if the utter blog posts freak out planet geosapatial as I know I've had problems with this in the past, for example, when I auto blog update images from flickr the planet GS freaks out and then I typically get an email from JAmes asking me what's up ;0) For more on utterz see http://www.utterz.com

Protection for that smartphone

I'm sure someone out there has an idea on where/who has some decent cases for a Nokia N95 (Darla also recently pointed this out). Usually I'd start at Otterbox but since the device is so new here in the US they aren't making one yet. Any ideas?? My case simply isn't cutting it!
A few things I found include this flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/tomasom/sets/72157602315717396/; Darla - http://darlamack.blogs.com/darlamack/2007/10/so-where-are-th.html;
and http://www.otterbox.com/ - maybe the Blackberry or iPhone case will work... otherwise looks like you need to shop in the UK.

Keep that N95 Charged - a charger solution for road warriors
